Temperature Blanket

Let’s craft our year together. We are making temperature blankets. Traditionally, a temperature blanket is either knitted or crocheted by doing a row a day for the entire year. Each day you add a new row according to the temperature outside. Before starting your project, you create a color palette to represent 10 different temperature ranges -- then every day you choose the color to work with that represents the temperature in your area. If done every day, by the end of the year you will have a beautiful blanket. No person will have the same blanket since weather varies by where you live. You could have made one before and it will still be a totally different blanket.

Join our Temperature Blanket Club! We will get you started by helping you decide on a palette and a pattern. Then we will meet once a month to show off our projects.

Class FAQs:

Q: How many colors do I need?

A: 10 different colors to cover the weather for the year but since we are in winter, we will not need all the colors right away.

Q: Do I need to buy all my yarn at once?

A: No. The starter kit has 5 skeins to start the project with. Since it is hard to predict the weather, we do not know exactly which color you will need more of. You can purchase more yarn as needed or when you come in for the monthly meeting. If you are joining via Zoom, you can order over the phone or in our online shop.

Q: How do I know what colors to use?

A: When you sign up, we will help get you started with a combo of colors you are happy with.

Q: Is there help?

A: There is always help at The Altered Stitch. By signing up, you will find help at Stitch Nights on Wednesdays and Fridays and at The Neighbourhood Knit and Crochet Circle on Saturdays. Stitch Nights are accessible through Zoom. Saturdays are meant to be in person for hands-on help.

Q: Is there a set pattern I must follow?

A: There are many patterns available through Ravelry. We are choosing mitered squares in both knit and crochet. The squares are more portable and can use 2 colours representing the high and low temp for each day to make a colourful square. But you can use whatever pattern you like. You will get help to decide if you want to do a row a day or a square a day.

Q: What other benefit is there to signing up for the Temperature Blanket Club?

A: You will be able to buy ALL the extra yarn needed for your blanket at a discounted price.

This project will be an exciting and fun way to record the year!
