Kid’s Knitting University
We are continuing the kid’s program from the summer where we teach kids how to knit in a new Montessori-like style program on one Saturday a month. Attend as frequently as you like. There are multiple projects to work on to learn the basics of knitting. Each child can work at their own pace and make as many or as few projects they are comfortable with before moving on to the next skill set. There is plenty of projects to practice that will keep your busy over the month until we meet the following month. We also offer private lessons and drop in help classes if they want to check in with their projects before the next official class.
We start with a purposefully, artful mismatched fingerless gloves (or wristbands, if preferred). They are knitted flat. Two high contrasted coloured yarns get to be chosen, one Main Colour and one Contrast Colour. The Main Colour will be the used to make the first mitt. The child will use the knit stitch to make a rectangle and use the Contrast Colour to whip stitch the sides together to finish the project.
The second mitt (or wristband) will still use the knit stitch but this time we will learn to stripe the two colours together by carrying the two yarns up the side. This is a very important skill that is not often learned until becoming a much more seasoned knitter. Then the mitt will get seamed up the side using the opposite colour yarn and we will have a funky mismatched pair that is the perfect way to proudly show off their new skills and wear.
Project 2 will be The Eazy Peazy Altered Beanie. It is a striped beanie pattern written by one our instructors at the shop. We will learn to read patterns, rib (a combination of knit and purl stitches), join to knit in the round, use stitch markers, change yarn colours, decrease stitches, and make a star closure. Plus, weave in ends.
Project 3 is a Messenger Bag using a thicker yarn. It uses 3 colours that we can match with the gloves and beanie. We will learn the stockinette fabric, how-to pick-up stitches, knit in the round, bind off, reverse stockinette.
Finally, with all the extra scraps we can use double pointed needles to make scrunchies!!!
So, by the time summer is over, with proper practice, attitude, and attendance your child can have a whole new fun set of accessories that not only is trendy but exudes confidence and displays the growth of a set of new skill over the past few months. Your child can proudly can say they made their new school outfit all by themselves.
