Oral Traditions Potholder
Oftentimes with the use of Ravelry and Etsy we forget that patterns used to be passed down from generation to generation orally. Finally, if only by necessity or special request it is written down on paper. In this CAL, we are going to be celebrating this while idea. One of our fiber friends from Stitch Night has an amazing potholder pattern that has been passed down from her German grandmother. She has been making this pattern for many years. The pattern is written down in her memory and on a piece of paper in German in non-traditional crochet terms. She shared this pattern with us and we will share this pattern with you. You cannot find this potholder on Ravelry and will be shared orally in class to carry on tradition. As part of the experience, we are going to write this down in pattern format together. This way, you have a pattern to take home and can share this pattern with someone else to keep the oral tradition alive. We feel it is important to not only to teach fiber techniques methods but to help remember where fiber arts came from. We need all a chance to experience what oral traditions feel like and keep them alive. If there is time, we may do a second pattern. You can join this amazingly special group in person or via Zoom.
